How does it work?

PalmID captures palm prints on the surface of skin using any camera, or additionally the subdermal palm veins if an infrared camera is available. The scan is processed locally on user’s device, encrypted, and then matched for identity and uniqueness check. A liveness detection is also performed to verify the user’s authenticity.

Entire palm has to be inside the field of view.

Fingers are spread for identifying the region-of-interest & capturing the palmprint.

Palm is parallel to the camera.

A right distance has to be kept during the verification process (<1s).

As a comparison, fingerprint, DNA and iris verification methods require special hardware which restrict their scalability.
As for facial recognition, it has serious privacy concerns. Human face is exposed and can be used for tracking in public spaces. Moreover a person’s facial image can be found online, with new AI technology like Deepfake which makes it easy for ID theft to obtain the base sample for creating a fake face. Regarding social acceptance, some indigenous cultures are against taking facial photos, the traditions of some areas also discourage certain groups from exposing faces in public areas. As well, using a single palm for verification outperforms facial recognition by 10 times. Apple’s Face ID is only for local 1-to-1 verification while PalmID can be used for global authentication with both palms.
Our system does not store any personal metadata, mitigating risks associated with data breaches and unauthorized access. Palm scan data also does not leave the local device, which guarantees that personal biometric data, once processed, cannot be reversed or reconstructed. No raw biometric data is saved to our server. The encrypted biometric signature is irreversible, providing robust protection against tampering. Also, in general, the lack of source data for forging makes the palm an inherently secure biometric modality. PalmID has also obtained SOC 2 on privacy & security; IBeta on accuracy & performance.
The accuracy of our palm print algorithm has been verified using public datasets. At a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 1 over 10 million, and the false rejection rate (FRR) is less than 1.5 percent. The more important metrics to ensure security here, FAR, is 10 times better than the reported FARs of Apple Face ID and WorldCoin Orb, both of which require special hardware.
